What is a CSA?
Short for Community Supported Agriculture, a CSA creates a direct connection between Hudson Valley farmers and the people who want to eat with the seasons. Members buy a share of the farm’s harvest upfront, giving growers dependable early-season support and helping establish a stable customer base before the busiest months of planting and picking begin. In return, throughout the harvest season, members receive a weekly CSA box filled with farm-fresh goods, from vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers to eggs, dairy, mushrooms, grains, or other locally produced staples. With a range of share sizes, pickup options, and payment plans, a Hudson Valley CSA can fit many kinds of households, budgets, and appetites while supporting regional agriculture and keeping more local food dollars close to home.
“Lots of farms are offering CSA add-ons from other farms such as fruit, meat, eggs, mushrooms, beans, or bread, to make their offerings more full-diet in nature,” says Kate Anstreicher, Associate Director of Regional Food Programs at the Glynwood Center. Examples include Gardiner Bakehouse’s Community Supported Bakery, or CSB, which offers bread add-ons to several vegetable CSAs in the New Paltz area, or Chaseholm Farm’s cheeky HolmGoods offering—a highly customizable meat and dairy CSA featuring pork, beef, yogurt, and cheese.
Another new development is the emergence of free choice CSA cards—basically a prepaid farm credit card with a bonus amount added. (For example, you purchase the card for $450 but it comes with $500 of credit.) You can spend this balance at the farm’s farmers market stand and/or farm store over the course of the season. This style is a good fit for folks with unpredictable schedules who can’t commit to a weekly pickup or people who want to select exactly which items they’re getting.
Why Get a CSA Share
With the abundance of farmers markets and roadside farm stands in the Hudson Valley, you might wonder why it is worth it to sign up for a CSA share from a local farm.
Any place you shop where the money goes directly to the farmer is a great way to support small-scale, sustainable, local agriculture, but a CSA has some of its own perks. In addition to your weekly CSA box goodies, farm shares can come with:
